Our adventure begins in Delhi, where we recommend that travelers convene at Mayur Vihar Extension Metro Station (gate no.2). Chopta is approximately 450 km away from Delhi, and the journey takes around 14 hours. Our chosen route leads us through the towns of Meerut, Muzaffarnagar, Roorkee, Haridwar, Rishikesh, Devprayag, Srinagar, Rudraprayag, and ultimately, Ukhimath, where we will arrive the following day.
The overnight journey to Rishikesh is followed by another 8 hours of a slightly challenging yet visually stunning mountain drive. Along the way, do take the opportunity to capture some memorable moments at the confluence of the Alaknanda and Bhagirathi rivers in Devprayag.
After covering significant ground from Delhi, we reach Chopta around lunchtime. This early arrival allows ample time for relaxation, rejuvenation, and exploration of the captivating campsite. The surrounding forests create an ambiance akin to scenes from a movie. We strongly recommend getting a good night's rest in preparation for our exciting ascent to Chandrashila, also affectionately known as the Moonpeak, on the following day.
Today, we embark on an exhilarating trek, aiming to conquer Chandrashila, one of the most enchanting peaks you may ever have the privilege to witness, weather permitting. According to one, it is the spot where Lord Rama meditated after vanquishing the demon-king Ravana, while another legend connects it to the moon-god Chandra's penance.
The trek from Chopta to Tungnath spans approximately 3 km, featuring a well-paved cemented trail. Beyond Tungnath, the trail becomes somewhat rugged during the 1.5 km steep ascent to Chandrashila. Tungnath Temple holds historical significance as one of the Panch Kedar temples and is renowned as the world's highest Lord Shiva temple.
The Chopta Tungnath trek is a pleasant one, though the final climb is quite steep, and as you ascend, you'll notice a shift in the landscape as the tree line recedes. Typically, it takes around 3 hours to reach Tungnath from Chopta and an additional hour to reach the Chandrashila summit. At the peak, you'll be rewarded with panoramic views of the Garhwal and Kumaon mountain ranges, including sights such as Kedarnath, Mandani, Chaukhamba, Nanda Devi, Nanda Ghunti, Hathi, Ghodi, and more.
After capturing the awe-inspiring scenery, we retrace our steps back to Chopta, following the same route, which takes approximately 30 minutes to reach Tungnath and another 60-90 minutes to descend to Chopta.
Our day begins in Sari, a charming village situated at an elevation of 6,601 feet. We depart from Chopta early in the morning at 8 am and reach Sari after enjoying a hearty breakfast. The trek to Deoriatal spans about 2.3 km, with a moderately steep trail that is fully paved with stones. Along the way, we encounter a temple, a few houses, and, after covering about 1 km, we are treated to a breathtaking bird's-eye view of Sari village.
Although the Deoriatal trek from Sari is relatively manageable, it can be a bit challenging for first-time trekkers. The trail winds through scenic Rhododendron and Oak forests. Upon reaching the lake, we come across a forest check post.
The lake itself is enveloped by lush forests, and on a clear day, the pristine waters mirror the surrounding mountains, creating a truly stunning spectacle. After trekking back down to Sari, we embark on our return journey to Delhi, arriving early the following morning, with hearts and souls full of cherished memories.
